VALOR’s “Reproductive Freedom: Get Out the Vote,” the first of three web conferences in this series, will focus on reproductive freedoms, increasing state attacks on them, and criminalizing people seeking out care. Sexual assault survivors, folks with uteruses, women, and men, should have the ability to decide their healthcare, if and when to start a family, and how to raise their children.

Panelists include Zsanai Epps, Senior Director of Reproductive Justice Initiatives at Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWH), Gretchen Barton, Principal and Founder of Worthy Strategy Group, LLC, and others to be announced.

Web Conference Series Description
As one of the most influential election cycles of our lifetime accelerates with less than 80 days until November 5th, we hear your questions on how to vote for topics closest to you, like ending gender-based violence, societal and cultural violence, advancing reproductive justice, and preventing gun violence. We also hold these topics close to our hearts and are equally as concerned.

At VALOR, we recognize how daunting it is to discuss these topics with others who may or may not hold the same belief systems and that education on how we address these topics to shape our collective future as equitably as possible is needed.

VALOR is hosting a three-part educational web conference series with guest panelists who will address these and similar topics. The web conferences aim to prepare us to enter the election cycle ready to confidently use our Collective Voice. Collective Power. Collective Action. to advance the equitable world that we all strive to live in.

Domestic violence coalitions identified burnout and selfcare as high priority areas for their coalition. This topical call will focus on wellness strategies implemented by coalitions and other violence prevention nonprofits to strengthen coalition staff and prevent burnout.  Coalitions are invited to share their wellness policies, strategies, and promising practices.

NLIHC, the National Alliance to End Homelessness, and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities invite advocates nationwide to register for a webinar series on advancing solutions to the homelessness crisis. On the webinars, we will share more about proven strategies to successfully end homelessness, best practices for state and local advocacy, and actions advocates can take to advance solutions.

Homelessness demands urgent action from all levels of government. We know what works to end homelessness: providing individuals with stable, accessible affordable housing and voluntary supportive services. On July 21st, 2024 HUD issued a 2-year Program Notice of Funding Opportunity for FY24 for the Continuum of Care Competition grant as authorized by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024.  The NOFO will also provide at least $52 million for new rapid re-housing, supportive services, and other activities critical to assist survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Communities are only required to submit one CoC application that will be applicable for FY 2024 and FY 2025 funds. The deadline to submit applications is October 30, 2024, 8:00 PM EDT. However, your project deadline will be much sooner. The competition is also open to Tribal Nations, so we invite Tribal programs that serve survivors to join us for more information.

This webinar will provide an overview of best practices to increase access for culturally-specific communities to HUD Continuum of Care (CoC) housing programs and DV/SA/HT Bonus resources in the current HUD Notice of Funding Opportunity. The presentation will discuss how to build effective partnerships with CoCs and DV coordinating councils to increase gender and racially equitable access to mainstream HUD CoC housing resources via Coordinated Entry systems; and learn creative approaches to partnering to ease administrative and reporting responsibilities for culturally specific programs.

Daya Houston, a community-based South Asian culturally-specific organization, will share how they expanded their culturally inclusive housing initiatives and share the overall positive impact of these best practices models in their communities. Presenter(s) Hareema Mela Rachna Khare from Daya Houston will highlight how to connect with your HUD CoC and Coordinated Entry System to partner in accessing and implementing available resources and how to expand housing opportunites with private and public partnerships.

Black immigrant survivors not only have to contend with the challenges that all other immigrant survivors face,  they also face unique challenges of anti-black discrimination and racial prejudice. Many Black immigrant women fleeing domestic and sexual violence and abuse, are turned away at the border, those permitted to enter the U.S., often meet a system that lacks cultural competence and is unprepared to meet their acute needs.

In addition, there is limited culturally relevant and appropriate research and services to address the issues that affect black immigrant survivors. There is also limited information on the economic and consumer rights issues that black immigrant survivors face. Since we know that there is no safety for survivors without economic safety, we must therefore seek to understand and address the economic and consumer issues that black immigrant survivors face.

This listening session will:

• Explore the ripple effect of domestic violence for black immigrant survivors
• Examine the landscape of economic and consumer issues facing black immigrant survivors.
• Share and lift up innovative advocacy strategies (legal and nonlegal) to help black immigrant survivors address their economic and consumer needs.
• Build partnerships that are expansive and increase access to services and economic resources for black immigrant survivors.

This presentation is an overview of why families from the island nations of Micronesia are moving to the state of Hawaiʻi, the obstacles they have to overcome, how they perceive the importance of the extended family, as well as effective strategies schools and communities can use to build effective and trusting relationships.

Traditionally, a referral to a shelter is a go to for many victims, but, is that the most effective way to escape the dangers of domestic violence (DV) or trafficking? At one point in time, the answer would have been a resounding, yes. However, as the DV movement has evolved, it has turned out that sheltering is not the end all, be all. This workshop will explore the history of the DV/shelter movement in the U.S. and discuss its impact on how practitioners provide services to victims of gender-based crimes. The presenter aims to fully discuss the pros and cons of shelter services to then be able to make informed referrals to services for victims. The presentation of alternative options such as long-term exit planning, transitional programs, etc. will also be explored.

Each month, from September to December 2024, we’ll use the Dashboard to help define problems, shift narratives, and build strategies & partnerships for policy change in Coerced Debt, Direct Cash / Flex Funding, and Thriving Wages for Advocates in the GBV Sector. These are interactive, live-TA and strategy sessions! Come with questions and a desire to “dive in” with your peers about your, their, and our collective advocacy efforts.
